Pave the Way, Freedom Fighters

Pave the way, freedom fighters. We are following your lead. - Leah Abraham

Dear Freedom Fighters,

The ones who are out on the streets and the ones who are demanding justice and accountability.

We see you. We see your grief, your anguish, your outrage, your fear.

We see you show up in spite of it and because of it. We hear you say their names and refuse to let their deaths be reduced to a statistic.

We’ll say their names, too.

George Floyd.
Breonna Taylor.
Ahmaud Arbery.
Sean Reed.
Tony McDade.

We will say their names and remember their full, holy humanity.

We will say their names and hold vigil.

We will say their names and take action.

We know you are tired. We know you are exhausted from declaring “Black Lives Matter” into what feels like an eternal void.

We will declare it, too. With our words, with our actions, with our bodies, and with every resource we have within our disposal.

Black Lives Matter.
Black Lives Matter.
Black Lives Matter.

We declare it as prophetic prayer. We declare it as protection over your body and soul. We declare it because we believe in Ubuntu. Unless you are free, none of us are free.

As you take to the streets to demand change, as you take to social media to educate and awaken, as you aid your local nonprofits that chip away at the systemic injustice, we vow to follow your lead.

We will watch your leadership and listen closely to your wisdom and stories. We will confess and do the inner work of dismantling our internal biases and educating ourselves. We will show up with signs, water, prayer, and cries for justice.

We will fight alongside you until we witness a day when black bodies are no longer targeted, lynched and dehumanized.
Until we no longer need to declare Black Lives Matter.
Until we no longer live at the mercy of a supremacist system.
We will show up and demand justice until we dismantle systemic oppression and we rebuild a better world for the next generation.

Pave the way, freedom fighters. We are following your lead.
